How to Choose a Wedding Photographer: 10 Questions to Ask

The 10 most important questions to ask before booking your wedding photographer — from editing style to backup plans, straight from a photographer's perspective.

Your Photographer Is One of the Most Important Vendor Decisions You'll Make

Here's something most couples don't realize until after the wedding: your flowers will wilt, your cake will be eaten, and the DJ will pack up. But your photos? They're the only vendor investment that actually appreciates in value over time. Decades from now, those images will be how you — and your children — remember this day.

That's why choosing the right photographer matters so much. And the best way to find your perfect match? Ask the right questions.

The 10 Questions

1. Can I see a full wedding gallery?

Anyone can curate 20 stunning portfolio shots. Ask to see a complete gallery from a real wedding. This shows you their consistency, how they handle different lighting, and whether they capture the in-between moments — not just the posed shots.

2. What's your shooting style?

Documentary? Editorial? Traditional? A blend? Make sure their natural style aligns with your vision. If you love candid, unposed moments, a photographer who specializes in formal portraiture might not be the best fit (and vice versa).

3. How many weddings have you photographed?

Experience matters — not because new photographers can't be talented, but because weddings are unpredictable. An experienced photographer knows how to handle rain, difficult lighting, tight timelines, and family dynamics without missing a beat.

4. What happens if you're sick or have an emergency?

Every professional should have a backup plan. Ask about their network of second shooters or associate photographers. What does their contract say about illness or emergencies?

5. How do you handle the timeline?

A great wedding photographer doesn't just show up and shoot — they help you build a timeline that ensures beautiful light, relaxed portraits, and no rushed moments. Ask how they collaborate with planners and other vendors.

6. What's included in your packages?

Beyond hours and edited images, ask about: engagement sessions, albums, prints, second shooters, travel fees, and overtime rates. Understanding the full picture prevents surprises.

7. When will we receive our photos?

Industry standard is 6-8 weeks for a full gallery. Be cautious of promises under 2 weeks (quality takes time) or timelines over 12 weeks (communication issues).

8. Do you shoot with a second photographer?

For weddings over 100 guests, a second shooter is almost essential. They capture the groom's reaction during the walk down the aisle, guest candids during portraits, and details you'd otherwise miss.

9. What's your editing style?

Light and airy? Dark and moody? True to color? Editing style is just as important as shooting style, and it's much harder to change after the fact. Make sure you love their editing as much as their composition.

10. Do you have insurance and a contract?

This protects both of you. Professional liability insurance and a clear contract are non-negotiables. If a photographer doesn't have these, that's a red flag.

The Most Important Factor

Beyond all these questions, the most important thing is connection. You'll spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than almost anyone else — including your partner. You need someone whose presence feels natural, who puts you at ease, and who genuinely cares about your story.

That chemistry can't be faked. Trust your gut.

Let's See If We're a Match

I always start with a relaxed consultation — no pressure, no sales pitch. Just a conversation about your wedding, your vision, and whether we'd be a great fit. I'd love to hear your story.
